Transformation of an Industrial Ceiling
The barren office ceiling was transformed with dramatic sweeps of fabric, with the translucence of gauze and cut-away, with the play of light along the folds, and the twinkling of the tiny lights.
Long sweeps of gauze interspersed with decorative panels add interest, variety, as well as ethereal and dramatic beauty to cover up the rawness and the unremitting rectangularity of an industrial ceiling. The gray metal structures were adorned with exhilarating expanses of illuminated fabrics, evoking images from God’s Word in the worshipper’s experience. The otherwise bland office space was transformed into a place of beauty and worship with merely fabric and light.

Some worshippers thought of the radiant splendor of the the Lord spreading His Canopy across the heavens. Many people experienced an impression of the beauty of the Bride of Christ when the canopy was lit with all white lights. Some felt the soaring power yet gentleness of the Holy Spirit. During Passion Week, worshippers realized at a deeper level the immensity of the little word “all” in Christ’s atonement covering all sin. Yet others contemplated the beauty and abundance of Christ’s cleansing blood available for all who would come to the Lord in repentance. When the lights were changed to orange, yellow, and red for Pentecost, people saw in the adornments a version of the Holy Spirit placing flames above the heads of the disciples in the Upper Room. Fabrics: One hundred yards of ivory-colored cotton gauze, 60 inches wide; six white panels of cut-away design, each 12 feet long, 45 inches wide, purchased at IKEA.
Lighting: We used blue theatrical gel in metal frames on small theatrical lights, red bulbs in a few of the office track lights, and regular white bulbs in others, to illuminate selected swaths for Passion Week. For Pentecost we used orange gels, adding yellow bulbs among the red ones.
